Risography

Risograph printing is a unique and environmentally friendly printing technique. The printing process involves using a digital master copy to create stencils. They are then mounted on a rotating drum where ink is then forced through the stencil onto paper, resulting in vibrant and textured prints characterized by bold colors and a slightly grainy texture.

A chart poster of 72 different risograph colour combinations arranged in a 9x9 grid. On the y-axis from top to bottom, the colours are yellow, bright red, fluo pink, fluo orange, aqua, green, teal, blue, black. On the x-axis from left to right, the colours are black, blue, teal, green, fluo orange, fluo pink, bright red and yellow.

Risography has its imperfections, which contribute to a handmade and retro charm. This method has found a niche in the creative world, especially among artists, designers, and small-scale publishers. It offers an affordable and efficient alternative to traditional printing methods while producing visually striking and one-of-a-kind colourful prints.

This technique is often introduced through printing workshops as they provide a hands-on experience for participants to explore the world of risograph printing. The rise in popularity of digital art and these digital softwares have also provided a more accessible way to interact with this printing technique. Using platforms like Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop or Procreate, the riso print effect and its signature texture can be mimicked digitally.
